Here is a veg shop in Totnes.  The businessperson (that’s him) is able to directly display his wares onto the sidewalk.  The entire community pays for the sidewalk.

But for the sidewalk, the grocer would not have nearly as an attractive business proposition.

But for the grocer, the town wouldn’t have nearly as healthy eating choices.

This is a great example of the right symbiotic relationship  – and scale – between the “market” and government.  I mention scale because right now, government exists mainly to facilitate the monopolistic practices of a few giant corporations.  Here, the benefit is direct, personal, and truly beneficial to the entire community.   We need more of this.

Now from an urban design standpoint, the sidewalk is too narrow.  But there is a nice hint of skyline in the background.
