Modern architecture is about standardization, the “starchitects” be damned. Modern architecture is the machine age brought to cities. But in less sophisticated times – even supposedly less learned – people could create great beauty without the need for standardization. The failure of much of New Urbanist architecture is that it is stills standardized. There is not the variation needed to create a great, simple skyline. Until we relearn architectural variation, our buildings and cities will stay sterile.
