The post below may be construed as dismissive of ramps. In tight urban spaces ramps are more functional than evocative. However ramps when used in allee form have great appeal. This is the processional way to the Duomo of Santa Margherita in Cortona; it is about 750′ long.
The path is lined on the right (above) by a retaining wall with the Stations of the Cross in mosaics.
