The gentility of simple landscape architecture

I love classic allees.  This is in Cortona – a wonderful .5 mile long flat space linking the town to various sporting venues and the southern side of the hill.  Places like this give dignity to the user:  they are allowed to have their own thoughts, their own moments.

Though I think few realize it, this peaceful wooded path is an artistic and political STATEMENT.  It speaks to the enormous importance of nature to our humanity as well as catering to our individual dignity.  It is also democratic:  a place that everyone can share, regardless of economic standing.  The design, planning and economic challenge is how to bring more of these places to communities that completely lack them.
